CF6-50 cone replacement

With operational stresses on the CF6-50 engine often requiring a replacement of the aft centerbody and cone, Lufthansa Technik Airframe Related Components (ARC^®) has developed a more economical alternative.

No replacement of entire centerbody

Offered through Lufthansa Technik Tulsa as an integral company of Lufthansa Technik's global ARC^® division, the new repair makes it no longer necessary to replace the entire centerbody.

Replacement aft cone

First the defective aft cone is removed from the centerbody, followed by the preparation for the welding process. Then a replacement aft cone is welded to the centerbody. After surface finishing of the weld the repair process is completed by an FPI (Fluorescent Particle Inspection) to ensure the quality of the joint.

Extending the operational life

Instead of scrapping a valuable component, the repair thus significantly extends the operational life of the centerbody. At the same time, Lufthansa Technik Tulsa performs the complete overhaul of the centerbody including replacement of the aft cone at a very competitive price -substantially below the cost of a typical replacement part. To minimize ground time, Lufthansa Technik Tulsa carefully manages the timing of such a repair, again enhancing the efficiency of the solution offered.
