Flight Control Surfaces

Steering the MRO on the right course

Lufthansa Technik Airframe Related Components (ARC®) is a leading provider for the modification, repair and overhaul of flight control surfaces, including ailerons, elevators, flaps, rudders, slats and spoilers.

Unnecessary scrapping

Moisture ingress and entrapment, ramp-rash incidents and other types of mechanical impact damage to flaps, ailerons and other flight control surfaces generate substantial costs for aircraft operators. These primary structures -expensive honeycomb sandwich and monolithic graphite components -are often unnecessarily scrapped. To make matters worse, new parts may not even be available within an acceptable time frame.

Dedicated repairs save costs

Luflhansa Technik offers a convenient solution to this problem. In close cooperation with the aircraft manufacturers Airbus, Boeing, and Bombardier, the company has developed and refined dedicated repair techniques for these primary structures. Over the years, numerous processes were developed, enabling Lufthansa Technik's Airframe Related Component Services to offer repairs that save operators up to 70 percent of the cost of OEM components.

A higher level of quality

At the same time, the quality-driven approach of Lufthansa Technik incorporates substantial improvements into the repair process, thus eliminating identified weak points of the respective part. For example, sophisticated technology such as IR thermography is being used for damage assessment of CFRP structures. To achieve a higher level of quality, process control coupon testing is performed, as well as non-destructive ultrasonic testing.
